There are two sources of energy: renewable and nonrenewable energy.
Nonrenewable Sources of Energy
Most of the energy we use comes from fossil fuels, such as coal, natural gas and petroleum. Uranium is another nonrenewable source, but it is not a fossil fuel. Uranium is converted to a fuel and used in nuclear power plants. Once these natural resources are used up, they are gone forever.
The process of gathering these fuels can be harmful to the biomes from which they come. Fossil fuels are put through a process called combustion in order to produce energy. Combustion releases pollution, such as carbon monoxide and sulfur dioxide, which may contribute to acid rain and global warming.
Renewable Sources of Energy
Renewable sources of energy can be used over and over again. Renewable resources include solar energy, wind, geothermal energy, biomass and hydropower. They generate much less pollution, both in gathering and production, than nonrenewable sources.
Solar energy comes from the sun. Some people use solar panels on their homes to convert sunlight into electricity.
Wind turbines, which look like giant windmills, generate electricity.
Geothermal energy comes from the Earth's crust. Engineers extract steam or very hot water from the Earth's crust and use the steam to generate electricity.
Biomass includes natural products such as wood, manure and corn. These materials are burned and used for heat.
Dams and rivers generate hydropower. When water flows through a dam it activates a turbine, which runs an electric generator

There are various people that experiment in "free energy" some using this concept. The idea is that you can tap into energy that exists at the atomic level by aligning atoms. For example in a Vortex (toilet bowl) the water almost un-explained will go faster than normal flow. This is becuase the water molecules line up, and pull each other. The opposite effect happens when the flow is suddenly stopped. You can damage pipes if a special piece of equipment that absobes this shock is not installed in home plumbing. So this concept can be proven easily.

Potential Energy
Potential energy is stored energy. It is the energy that exists within an object. It is the stored energy of position possessed by an object. The following are potential forms of energy:
Stored Mechanical Energy - the energy which is possessed by anobject due to its stored energy of position. Rubber bands and springsare good examples of stored mechanical energy.
Nuclear Energy - energy locked in the nucleus of the atom. Nuclearpower plants split atoms in a process called fission.
Chemical Energy - the energy stored in food, wood, coal, petroleum,and other fuels.
Gravitational Energy - energy stored as a result of gravitationalforces concentrated by the earth for the object. A water held back by a dam is an example of gravitational energy.
Kinetic Energy
Kinetic energy is the energy of motion. When you are walking or running, yourbody is exhibiting kinetic energy. The following energy types are kinetic:
Electricity - energy produced when something upsets the balancing force between electrons and protons in atoms.
Light or Radiant Energy - waves that emit energy. Examplesinclude: radio and television waves, gamma rays, and x-rays.
Heat or Thermal Energy - created by heat. The hotter an objectbecomes and the more thermal energy it possesses

Solar, nucler, tidal, energy of the wind, energy of the water in rivers, energy from burning fossil fuels. You can get electric enery out of all the above.
Speaking in more fundamental way - there is potential energy and kinetic energy.
