If an engagement ring was taken for an apprasial would the man get upset? Wouldn't curiousity kill you to know how much it is? Not that it should matter... but just out of curiousity. And what if you found out it was CZ (and you were misled to believe it was diamond) would you be upset? Also, apprasial might not just be for curiousity but for insurance purposes. This is not a personal question, I was just curious myself..

Well you should have it appraised for insurance purposes. If it turns out to be CZ tell your fiance, they might have gotten swindled.

First of all if you are going to spend a large sum of money on a ring then I would suggest having it appraised and insured, that is completely understandable. Second thought, why do you care if it is real or fake, is that why you would be marrying the guy? Why would a nice band not do? What if you found out that the guy you loved completely bought you a CZ because he didn't have the money but didn't want to disappoint you, would you think that he lied or wasn't as good a guy? If you think for a second that there would be distrust because of appraising a ring for anything other than purely insurance you are right? If I was the guy I would question why I was marrying this person who was so concerned about the jewelery and not the marriage, and why they felt the need to do so in the first place.

the only way I would have it appraised is if I were getting it insured. Rings tear up and break all the time and have to go in for repairs. Why would he buy a fake one? If you just want to know how much it is, it's pretty tacky of you to follow thru with the appraisal. If you think he may have bought a fake and is pulling it off as real....do you really think you two should get married? There is nothing wrong with a cz if it's all you can afford at the time until he can replace it with the real thing, but that should be open and known by both parties. Hopefully for most people who are getting married, the love is more important than a simple rock and money.

You SHOULD have all of your good jewelry photographed and appraised for insurance purposes. The appraisal should obviously be done by a different jeweler than where the jewelry was purchased. Also, don't get a recommendation from the same jeweler, the appraisal needs to be completely independent. If the ring turns out to be CZ instead of real diamond, you either have a cheap man or a fraudulent jeweler. This happened to a couple I know, they sued and got their money back. Some jewelers are really smarmy and you absolutely must have the ring appraised to make sure it's not fake.

As horrible as it sounds it might be a wise thing to do.
And the fact remains that there are untrustworthy peolpe in this world.
A friend of mine took a famiiy heirloom brooch to have repaired & much later found that the jeweler had replaced the stones with fake!

I think it should be discussed with the fiance' first. He may have to confess that it is't a diamond. But it is still real. It was bought with his heart.

Girl Im so glad you asked that question just 2 days ago i went to Zales and got my ring checked out and the stone was CZ !!
i was so shocked I almost died. The side stones were real so I told my bf and he was pissed off and he told me he spent over 5,000 dollars on it. So he went back to the store and they claim the the ring was real and all this crap. Now lawyers are involved and he's gotta go to court. It's nothing wrong with geting it checked out ! If you have that feeling that I had you better go get it checked out. Better now then ever. Im feel so embaressed I didn't really tell anyone. But take me advise please !

Since I was with to pick out my ring, I have no reason to have it appraised.
I do think it would hurt feelings. As far as insurance goes, the person who bought it more than likely got insurance for it through the jeweler it was purchased from in case of damage (lost/loose stones, etc) or it being lost or stolen.

I think it is a sign of curiousity, not distrust. Personally, I would be pissed if it was a CZ, but that's up to the individual.

Probably if it WAS a fake or CHEAPER then he lead you to believe. Not if I really felt/believed that he loves me UNLESS it was unbelievably big. "Hell hath no furry like a woman SCORNED" Especially if I was all ready married to him. Insurance purposes, a Valid reason for an appraisal. What he doesn't know wont hurt him, UNLESS he lied to me; I will Hurt him.

You NEED to appraise it to have it insured.

What happens if it gets lost or stolen?

It's a preventative measure incase something bad happens to the ring.
