There are many languages that use feminine and masculine in their words. Feminine gender is usually applied to words describing vessels such as cup, glass, ship, etc., because they can contain something. Probably to do with the fact that women have a womb and can contain a baby.

Well, Great Britain in Medieval times was known as the Mistress of the seas. Shipping was very important. Especially during the reign of Queen Elisabeth I. So ships were taken as living beings and in Queen's honor as female.

This is a tradition which started in Great Britain where shipping industry and building was starting blooming centuries ago.

The British used to give female names to their ships and that is why world wide a ship is a "she" even when the ship's name is "Steve" or "Adam" for example.

Usually it is men who serve on boats. And men like to think about women, so the ship becomes the women in their life. Something to take care of and protect, something to love.

Sailors are really helpless at sea, like a baby in its mother's arms, so the ship is their safety in the womb.

I honestly dont know. But I've noticed that most people not only refer to ships/boats as "she" but also cars, trucks, etc etc.
I'd like to know the answer too.

im not sure, but i think it was because teh ships, as with planes during WWII, were often named after the women the sailors and pilots left behind

actually I'm not sure, but probably it's beacuse most captain or owner is male, so they would normally name their ship by a lady's name. if not probably it's got to do with french genderized language

Mariners did not have their ladies with them asea. They were lonesome and had to have affection for domething, anything!
