Would you start "sinning" as much as possible? Without the threat of hell, there's no reason not to, right? So would you run around naked, raping passerby, torching buildings, and eating babies?
Or would you still try and be a good person out of respect for yourself, the rest of humanity, and the planet? Is knowing "the right thing to do" part of what makes us human?
This is mostly aimed at people who consider themselves religious and who base their moral codes on their religion, but everyone is welcome to answer.
Note, I am not asking if you think this will happen. I know what your answer will be. All I am asking is that you streach your imagination to that magical land of "What If." Please, people, try to be creative here.

So, the only thing that keeps societies from running around naked, raping passerbies, torching buildings and eating babies is religion?
And... so running around naked is about the same thing as eating babies? Wow!!!
I don't give a damn about the hell threat, and yet I consider myself a good person, who would never do something so terrible as those things you mention. And I won't do them for myself, not because there's a sad religion out there telling me what to do.
BTW, I know you said you're playing, but it is really annoying to play with these things. That's why I won't play along, and I'm giving you this serious answer. I'm scared when I read things like this.

Life goes on as before. You'd have to get of the rule of law before breaking out into the anarchy dance. But....
It would be cool to hunt down the heads of repressive religions and force them to pay for the biggest damn party seen since the Romans stopped feeding Christians to the lions.
I imagine there'd still be enough money left over to finance research so we'd have a cheap and renewable fuel source, end world hunger and poverty.

All right, I'll try. Ahem. First, I'd tackle the "proof" that there is no God until I'd found the flaw, and then I'd continue to worship until the authorities came to arrest me. So there.
Well, what did you expect? That's like saying, what if there were no people in the world; what would you do then? I mean, c'mon.
Oh all right. *Sigh.* If there really was no God ("Goodbye, Father!") and no religion, I'd probably try to ... get on everybody's good side. Don't ask why; I have no idea, myself.

to late now...but if there were no god, i would hope i would be a smiler person, looking at things,, to see the reactions...if i did bad...i would see how it reacted with others, if i were good , id look for that result. i don't like pain all that much, and so far , when i do something [bad], i usually experience pain, of some sort.
when i do something good, there is some ...good feeling
I'm not a person who intentionally hurts others, so id hope id be some what similar to the way i am now, accept, i would ware less clothing
if there is no goddess.....then would there be no [e s p ]??
if there were no inner sense of good or bad, the world would be a miserable place to live

All intelligent creatures in the Two Universes know the difference between right and wrong.
I think people who follow the codes of the religions just for their own personal salvation are hypocrites. And Christianity states that a person is saved by the grace of GOD, it doesn't matter HOW much they sin! So either way, I doubt they would be affected much.

One big misconception is that if a person calls themselves "religious" they assume they are a good person. I've personally met people who claim to be religious that make comments like "the nazis had the right idea"........
Another big misconception is that if you don't go to church, and aren't "religious" people condemn you as being evil, or doomed to hell....and they don't even know you.
Realistically, if so many people are good "christians" why is the world such a shitty place?
I wouldn't change much, because I don't beleive in God now. I ask what type of God would let orgranized religion become what it is today, preaching bigotry and hate while proclaiming it the will of the lord.
If the only point you can find in life is to worship, then you really aren't enjoying life the way GOD intended, are you? If God intended for us to live our entire life, worshipping, and doing nothing but talking about god and sitting in a church, he wouldn't have built a world, he would have built us a church to sit in.

My personality and behavior would not change. But then again, I was raised in a household with morality that was not governed by religion. Basically, here's my parents message to us: "OK so there's a lot of religions out there, and they're all valid. Feel free to pick one when you grow up, or not. Just be a good person."

Girl Wonder,
That is actually a great question! I wouldn't "try and be a good person out of respect for" myself. I know that I am not a good person. Knowing the right thing to do comes and goes.
I don't consider myself 'religious' but only One of God's faithful. My understanding of morals is undeveloped.
So I am somehow removed from the typical Christian communication.
I would keep on trusting in His word, even to the point of being a fool, which I am anyway.

Human society started without a god to believe in. Our ancestors did not sin, infact, they live in a primitive communal society where everyone has a role for the survival of the whole tribe. I don't think the existance of a supreme being is a precondition for doing good.

I would still believe in god, cos faith is belief in unbelievable.
If assuming an imaginary variable helps you solve a problem in math, you'll do it. And math is most perfect and logical subject around here.
Why not do it for real life as well?
Fear of hell is what prevents lots of people from being less than human. God is necessary for humans to survive. Like dope is necessary for addicts. So religion is, in a way, opium of the masses.
