...on the amount of Eastern Europeans coming into this country? I'm not being racist, but (tabloid press notwithstanding) I think the UK will indeed be overcrowded.

I wondered how long it would be for WHITE immigrants to get the sneers...the fact that we have as many immigrants in is down to the Britons' alleged shyness to perform such jobs. Look at the amount of trades that have gone to the wall over the past, say three decades - we are indeed now a 'corner shop' nation, dealing with leisure etc. But there are still trades which need to be filled - and as always, the Brits have their heads too much up their own rears to make efforts to attend courses to attain the skills for the trade. We'd rather watch 'mockney' chefs on telly and think how sexy it is - sign up for an NVQ2/3/4 catering course and drop out when we find out a wee bit more brain needs to be used...but that's only one trade. I suspect there are more - but all we can do is grumble about how successive governments since the early seventies has buggered up our country.
'Tis trus some immigrants are looking for a free ride (perhaps like some the Britons who killed and maimed in order to gain the empire of the middle of the last millennium...Jamaica 1655 a case in point), but we will now have to accept that most of the immigrants now are just like the immigrants of the late 1940s - Jamaicans, no less - who indeed saw the UK for what it was...they could do business with it, for the home inhabitants were not prepared to perform certain jobs and trades...it, allegedly was 'beneath them'. The same thing is happening today, and still we moan - without discussing the reason!

Many of the Eastern Europeans coming into the country are adding to the economy and filling gaps in the labour market that many British people are unwilling or unable to fill. However, I do believe that there should be a limit to the number of people allowed to migrate across the EU. Perhaps an easy way to deal with it would be to have ID cards for all people immigrating into the country and a time limit for their stay. This would also help deal with the influx of illegal immigrants.

First thing, when you specify a limit on a particular group of people (ie Eastern Europeans), you a treading a dangerous line that could be construed as prejudiced.

Anyways, that said, maybe the Australian system would be a plan? I don't mean the bit about sending war boats after refugees, I mean the bit about allowing in only those folk the country needs - so for example, there's a shortage of hairdressers, so trained hairdressers get visas.

Yes. There should also be a limit on the amount of times they can legally apply for assylum. I mean, after they have been turned down once, they should be allowed to appeal once if they think they should. Then if they are still turned down, they shouldn't be able to apply again. I think it's really stupid that immigrants can stay illegal while waiting for applications of assylum to be dealt with. They should automatically be refused if they are already here. There is too much being done to help foreigners, the government apparently don't realise, or don't care, that people who actually belong here are becoming worse off because of immigrants.

How about 1 in and 5 out?

I heard the other day that the government was considering a cap on the amount that we let in, i think it's a good idea.
for those of you who doubt, I have a freind who was on the housing waiting list, he was 6th in the que. 6 months later no house so he gave the council a buzz, turns out he's now 326th in the que due to an influx of immigrants.
something needs to be done, it's a little unfair the way it is at the moment.

Should be done on a system like the random Jury Summons that people receive.

People wanting to come to the UK should have to officially apply beforehand and then a randomly selected amount of them are granted entry. However they would have to be eligible to do this before they even get entered into the 'pool' for random selection.

Great question!

:-)

yes I agree with you, we are a small island and look at how much of our country side is being dug up to build more home to house the extra people here. Look at the people who come over here, work and send the money to the country thay came from, not putting it back into our economy. look at places like hounslow or bradford, bristol. some are now no go areas due to being over populated by people who even today do not understand or speak english but take the money NHS service, council homes etc. I think it's time we started to look after the ports and airports and started sending some back.

its not just a matter of us its for immigrants as well, yes we are being inundated with immigrants from all over the world, but this government is not doing enough to reduce this, also their are immigrants who come to the UK cause their pay for menial jobs here are more thank skilled jobs where they live but some are sleeping rough, in squats or overcrowding houses.

no as long as they don't become scroungers and live off benefits....

i am an immigrant myself and in the last 15 yrs in the uk i have been contributing more than 45,000 pounds in taxes and n.i. and i am happy to continue contributing

as for overcrowding....there is a vast amount of land in the uk which could be future towns for them...
