I smoke and enjoy smoking at the beach. Its a nice, relaxing place to smoke. Since its in the open air, the smoke shouldn't really bother anybody unless they set up their blanket right next to the smoker. Some smokers are just rude though. They'll blow smoke in some kid's face if they come near their blanket. If there is a kid near me, I don't smoke until he leaves. He doesn't want to breathe in my smoke.
I also can't stand it when nonsmokers tell me that I can't smoke, when it is obvious that I'm not bothering anybody. I'm a courteous smoker.
I never, ever leave cigarette butts in the sand. That is absolutely DISGUSTING!
I hate it when rude smokers ruin it for everybody.
Smokers aren't the only ones that trash the beach though. Besides the cigarette butts, plastic bags, wrappers, etc. gets left on the beach.
I think everybody needs to clean up after themselves. The world is not a trash can.

Smoke-free beaches? I'd like all the smokers to wear little enclosed helmets where they can just breathe that crap in non-stop 24/7. Smoke all you want, as long as it doesn't come near me, go for it. And smokers at the beach picking up after themselves?? I'll sprout male genitalia before that happens. Every smoker I know thinks the world is their personal ashtray. Also, no one has the right to injure my health except ME. And the comment about overweight people in bikinis??? Is that giving anyone lung cancer? Didn't think so.
Our personal rights do not include the right to harm others. That's the bottom line here...it's about doing something that is harmful to other people. And no - you don't have that right any more than I have the right to knee you in the groin just because I "enjoy" that. Get the point??

A smoking ban on beaches sounds good. It improves the experience of being at the beach, not having to breathe other people's bad habit and walk around on cigarette butts.

I am a smoker and if beaches are smoke free that would be a good thing. The sand is not your personal ash tray.

I was born and raised is San Diego and unfortunately I live in Reno, NV right now, but I am totally disgusted to see cigarette butts on the beach!! When we visit family we always go to the beach. I always have to clear the area where we sit to rid it of cigarette butts!!!

I agree with you, the smokers should be allowed to smoke outside, at the beach and at the stadium also. I am not a smoker, but it is a bad law. What if a law gets passed saying that overweight people can't wear bikinis at the beach or eat nachos at the stadium. I know that sounds silly, but once this kind of right removing law is passed what will be next. I live in SD also.

I see your point. My point of view is that of a mother of a five-year-old. Secondhand smoke does bother me because I know that if/when my little boy inhales it, it's more destructive to his health than it is to the health of the smoker. Smokers put my son in danger when they smoke at a place where families go to for recreation and relaxation and just for spending quality time with each other. Other than that, like you mentioned, I don't want my little one to step on cigarette trash while he's running along the shore looking for shells. Especially if it's one that may be still burning and could burn his feet. Moreover, the beach is place people go to for the beauty of nature and for the breeze of fresh ocean/sea air. Smokers ruin that for everybody else around them. I think smokers should practice a vice that is damaging to other people around them-in their own homes! If they don't care about smoking themselves to death, wel,, that's their choice for THEMSELVES. But they shouldn't drag other people down with them!

Personally I smoke, so I think it would suck, but I also have kids and smoke outside only, so I can see people not wanting their children around the smoke, because I don't like mine around it either, I guess we could have smoking / non smoking areas on the beach like we do in resteraunts.

i love that idea. or at least a designated area. my younger brother was severely allergic to cigarette smoke. any time we went to the beach there would always be people smoking. he would get an asthma attack and would have a miserable time.
