While it is indeed possible that a meddlesome cat and its kids, too, have gotten into your air conditioner, a more common issue in a/c units is fungus. In fact, in the case of GE (whose air conditioners primarily come in white) ...you can see it clearly as black specks.

Bleach kills fungus quite well. It kills your lungs pretty well if you're not careful.
You might find temporary and slight respite from the stink if you remove and clean the filter, or replace it completely, but more likely, you'll need to bleach some of the inside of the unit itself. ..I'd contact the manufacturer about suggestions on how to do this.

good luck-

The stinky smell is caused by bacteria growth in the air con system. Check if the drain tube for the condenser is blocked or not. Sometimes it get blocked or pinched and the moisture cannot escape or drain from the system. Buy air con disinfectant spray at your local parts store and use as directed on the can.

The final solution is to find and fix the root cause of the smell

Due to the moistier building up inside your evaporater Box and the build up of dirt, leaves and hair the bootom part (where your drain is )becomes a compost heap and that stink's it is a good idea to clean out that Box and make sure the drain is not blocked'
Sometimes on some cars The evaporator is damaged because of this and it leak's. thus resulting in the loss of Gas and oil that smells as well' Maintenance on those items is ovelooked by many People'
Take care!

Is the car used and newly bought it could be cigarette smoke. the best solution is to clean it whether smoke fungus or whatever.
If you can get the cover off the evaporator and spray a solution of bleach water on it then try Odor-Ban on it as a rinse.
If you cannot get the cover off spray the above solutions into the fresh air inlet while the fan is on and cycle heat and A/C. put some towels in the floorboard and in front of vents to catch the spray.
you may have to do this a couple of times.

there is probably mold in the AC system. This can happen with you have the AC on circulation and don't put the vent on when you part to allow the condensation to dry out. Mold grows in the pipes and cause a small. It can be removed - take your car to your dealer and ask them about it.

It sounds like your refering to the musty odor you sometimes get when you turn on a/c. You build up moisture on your evaporator which then collects dirt, leaves, etc. then mixed with the moisture causes the musty odor. The remedy is to remove your blower motor then you'll gain access to the evaporator, then use air pressure to blow out water and debris from the evaporator. Do this once a year and it should solve your odor problem.

Is it car AC or in your house? I think the best idea so far was the one who said to wash it and spray febreze. Seems like a good idea. You should replace the filter if it has one though.

there my be some mold on your condenser. open your hood and look for a pipe that sticks out at the bottom of your fire wall. this pipe will be the one where the water pools under after you park the car and shut down the a/c. there should be an access panel directly behind it where the condenser is. get a good cleaner and flush it out.

Try servicing the a/c because it might have algae formed in the fins and clean your filter regularly this might eliminate the smell or try using air freshener.
