This does surprise me, as the country is essentially based on a penal colony. Does this challenge the notions of eugenics?

To correct some misconceptions, only about 1% of Aussies have any convict ancestry (and I mean ANY as 1 ancestor 150 to 200 years ago means about 6% of your genes). Prior to loosing the war, England sent their convicts to their American colonies. But it matters nothing as the notions of eugenics were thrown out with the nazis!! Australian punishments are much more lenient than those in the US. And it is true that Australia has low crime rates, but they are in line with those of most western countries.

eg. Murder is 7 per 100,000 in the US, 3.5/100,000 in Portugal, and around 2/100,000 in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Britain, Germany, Holland, Sweden, Italy and I could go on.

It is really the US that is an outlier. Australian crime rates are pretty average for a western country.

Oh, and no-one drinks that Fosters pish in Australia - seriously! - it's saved up for all the gullible tourists.

95% of Australia's' population is on the shoreline. so the cops are heavy in those spots. not to mention the punishments there are probably more severe than America. Americas' legal system has the most slack in the world, by far.
hence our high crime rate. like in Cuba there was 2 murders last year. that's where they beat you to a bloody pulp if your in prison. coincidence?

Actually the crime rate in Australian metropolitan cities is higher than it is in most U.S. metro cities. In fact throughout the last five years Australia has had ot issue travel warnings four times because of high crime.
