A quick test of your blood sugar level can be done by poking your finger with a lancet, a pin like poke. Within a few seconds, you receive a reading. If abnormally high or low, a blood glucose will be needed, which is drawing blood from a vein. There are diabetics that are diet controlled and are monitored by a lab test, AIC that is done every 3 months, and they can go without frequent finger sticks, maybe daily or weekly in the extremely well controlled diabetic.

finger poking usually goes on at home testing for blood sugar. lab tests are done for a doctor with blood drawn from your arm, into a vial. this is the most common way. i am sure there might be doctors out there using small meters in the office and a small lancet or blade quickly pierces the skin to make a small cut.
