First of all, if you're wondering about this because you care what he thinks, you should relax. Personal touches in things like cards that are from just you and not the whole floor or team of co-workers are weird though, I agree. I would make a little joke, one that's between the two of you if you've got one... but not be too friendly because he's your boss- the one who needs to think of you as "professional".
Hope that I helped...

Draw from your personal experience with your boss, but keep it on a professional level, when sending the message.

There are various meanings to the word BOSS - one of them is AN IDIOT! But MY BOSS - YOU proved to be nothing close to the meaning of that word and having you as my BOSS - the only other meanings which i can associate you with the word BOSS is FRIEND, MENTOR, GUIDE, ASSOCIATE, COLLEAGUE, LEADER, MOTIVATOR, INSPIRATION, CREATIVE, TASK MASTER, ACHIEVER, SUCCESS and MORE!! Happy BIRTHDAY!! Dont BLAST but HAVE A BLAST!!:-)
