I try not to get too big for my pants, if you know what I mean. I am considered by many to be an expert at the instrument but I know I am not as disciplined as calssical musicians are. I also know that as far as improvisation goes I beat them hands down. I can still grow though..I hear Steve Vai and I am amazed..until I reproduce it...then when I hear it again I am amazed all over again...I suppose I am just a lover of guitar music and I am not going to change that any time soon..I love it so much...anyone out there like me?

You got it right there... I'm a classical cellist and I'd like to share something with you...

The composer George Gershwin (of West Side Story fame), at the height of his career, never missed an opportunity to take lessons in counterpoint, harmony and composition. It is said that when he approached one teacher (I believe Stravinsky but not 100% certain), the teacher asked how much he was earning. When Gershwin told him, he said, "Then I should be taking lessons from you instead!"

Such was the humility of a great composer, and it shows that no matter how great you are, you still have things to learn, as do we all.

There is always something new to learn on the guitar regardless how long you've played. "Mr. Guitar," Chet Atkins, had said that very same thing and I must agree.

There are so many different playing styles among the popular guitarists today and a player can borrow any or all methods to his satisfaction.

While the style of Chet Atkins's is my favorite, I employ other styles too to form my own.

Nevertheless, I don't know it all even though I've been playing for 50 years.

Continue with your philosophy and you'll always improve.

I'm certainly not like you because I do not think that it is possible to achieve what you have achieved without desire, determinationa and discipline. I dont know which one I lack but you seem to be in a position I'd love to be in as far as guitar is considered. I've heard that what you say is true (that there's always new things to learn) and this is not true only about guitar but about music itslef. Good luck.

For sure. I love playing guitar, and you're dead right about still being able to learn something all the time. Even if it's just a difference in style, I love learning new stuff about playing.
