Push-ups are good for upper body, but they are limited by your body weight. Weight training allows you to use more weight than what you have to push against in a push-up. Since part of your weight is supported by the feet, a push-up probably only uses 60 per cent of your weight on the arms. You sound like you can do a good amount, but strength comes with increasing resistance which you can't achieve with just push-ups. To give you an idea of what I mean...I am 59 years old, weigh 210 and bench press a little over 200 pounds because I was able to increase the weight used beyond the amount my upper body has.

They are very helpful in building the chest and the triceps, and should be good for the abdominal muscles, as well.

If you want to build those muscles still larger than you can with push-ups, you may need to do bench presses instead, at that point, because you can add more weight than the amount your body provides in push-ups. If your goal is just aerobic fitness, and/or muscle definition, push-ups should be plenty.

Note that if you weigh, say, 150 pounds, that doesn't mean push-ups are like bench pressing 150 pounds. In a bench press, all the weight is over your arms and chest, whereas in push-ups, the weight of your body is distributed between your hands and your feet. So in that case, push-ups might be more equivalent to bench pressing, say, 100 pounds (since the majority of one's body weight is in the upper body, and therefore over the hands).

Since you can do at least 30 pushups, my understanding is that *if you want to gain mass* and not just build definition, you might be better off with a bench press, more weight, and fewer repetitions.

And sorry, I don't know what's normal.

There are three main ways to lose weight quickly.

1) Use only water as liquid and eliminate all other liquid drinks from your diet. You must drink as much water as possible every day. You must drink about half of your weight. If you have weight of 200 pounds then you must drink about 100 oz of water.

2) The interval between the eating is very important. If you eat once, then you must eat next after 4 hours. You must take breakfast regularly. In the night eat your food three hours before going to bed.

3) Walking is very good. You must walk as much as you can. Walk everywhere you can. Use of elevators and escalators must be reduced and instead of these you must climb stairs more often.

These are some of the fastest ways to lose weight. By just following the simple steps, you can lose your weight very quickly. You must consult your doctor if want to change your diet or exercise routine.

sure it's helpful. in fact, it's a good supplemental exercise to do after you've lifted chest. i usually hit the weights on chest and blow out as many push ups i can do at the very end. it ensures that you chest muscles are completely spent.

let's see at 19, i was doing sets of 30 - 50 reps. forget about average, you are likely already above average. keep working at it doing lots of sets, and try different kinds of push ups. put your hands wide, put your hands very close together, try elevating your feet, clapping push ups, uneven push-ups (with your hands not directly underneath you shoulders, put one hand closer up to your head and the other lower towards your stomach). then every now and then do a blow out set where you try and do as many push ups as you can in 1 minute.

good luck

Buy a set of push-up stands. They let you drop farther, thus stretching the muscles, and you have to work harder to get back up. It works the muscles much more completely, giving you a better workout. You should use free weights too(dumbells or barbells), so you can do bicep curls etc.
