When you are anxious or scared, your breathing tends to become more shallow and then the body panics because it feels like it is not getting enough air. You need to relax and distract yourself from these scary thoughts. After you calm down, you will feel normal again.

Fear, even imagined fear, causes a "fight or flight" reflex that causes the blood vessels to expand and floods your system with adrenaline... this can cause the throat to contract, somewhat, and while you're not in real danger of suffocation, in some it can cause a noticable difference in the ability to breath, and since you're already not thinking rationaly, reinforce the fear and you get a full blown panic attack. At which point, psychosomatically, you might find that you really do have problems breathing.

I'm sure that I got some of the medical details wrong, but it's a close enough answer for my purposes, which is to avoid thinking about scary things.

That is a typical anxiety attack. Period. Don't let anyone tell you anything else.
If you want to get rid of it...it is the same. Stop thinking of scary things and start thinking about why it is not rational to think these things and then start thinking about wonderful things..
