If I do that, will the savings be worth the 1 hour drive and any duty I may have to pay at the border?

It depends. If you're buying a $300 TV, then no. If you are looking at a 60" rear projection or something like, which may cost up to $3000, then yes. Depending on your home province, I think the savings in taxes alone would be worth it. Although paying duty might negate those savings.

Now, if you spend several days in the States or someone from the States brings the TV to you, then you might avoid paying duty. You can also try to lie at the border about exactly how long you were in the States. When I lived in Windsor, we used to do it all the time when bringing duty free liquor back.

Not really. A friend of mine was looking into the very same thing and found that any savings on the price of the television was eaten up with the customs fees and taxes.
I bought some art supplies online and they got stuck at customs. That great deal of mine ended up costing twice what I could buy the same items for in Canada.
The Canadian government does not want us shopping in the States and this is how they stop us.

Probably. Canadian prices seem to be higher than US prices, even with the exchange rate difference. Check with Canadian Customs about tariffs before buying anything. You may get off free -- you can do some shopping duty-free from time to time.

No, you'll get dinged on the duty and taxes,Canada Customs duty is a B*i*tch .TVs are going down in prices and any savings you think you will get even with the high dollar lately is lost after those.
