(Sex Offender Registry, St. Louis, MO)
Bear in mind that registries only list people who have been convicted of a sex-related crime. They do not list perverts and others who may have committed one but who haven't yet been found out, and those who haven't yet committed their first one at a time and place where registries exist.
They also include a number of irrelevant cases, including some men who married underage girls ("nonage"). Perversely, some could even include cases where two underage teens lived together as a couple and were prosecuted. And they could include miscarriages of justice: for example, some ex-wives allege child sex abuse in opposing a former spouse's custody claim. And everybody remembers the hysterical prosecution (of the Salem witch trial sort) of day car providers in the 1980s: 3rd & 4th links below. This happened in Scotland as well, only it was the parents who were accused by fanatical social workers, and many children were taken away from them.
In places where lynching still happens, mobs often lynch innocent men over rumors and supposition. Sex offender registries are very helpful to informed and rational people, but they can have perverse results. The NY Times article (second link; free access but you may have to register) discusses the problem of some registries and residence restrictions making men homeless (and thus inhibiting effective control).

Those lists are not always updated. I can think of at least a dozen cases where the sex offender did not register. They do this of course because they don't want us to find out that they are sex offenders and living in our neighborhood. So be very careful. Definitely look them up but teach your kids how to defend themselves from kidnapping and sexual assault.
