Yes, penguins can't fly. Yes, penguins are birds. But they are not the only birds that can't fly. Ostrichs, emus and others are not able to fly.

Penguins are birds and they cannot fly. BUT, if you watch them swimming at high-speed under water, which they do to fish, play, migrate, etc. their flipper-like wings move in the same patterns as a bird that flies through the air. So, in effect, they are "flying" underwater.

Dude, seriously?

There are many, many flightless birds. Penguins can't fly. Neither can ostriches or emus.

It's just evolution. Species evolve to best fit into their surroundings. Penguins don't need to fly, because they eat fish - so they need to swim, and they're really good at that. So, over time, they lost the ability to fly.

Penguins can't fly. Their ancestors probably could fly, but when Antarctica got cold (it wasn't always cold) they had to evolve. Their wings got thicker, probably to insulate them from the cold. Also, the only food they can eat is in the ocean, so they became very good at swimming and lost the ability to fly. It's evolution.

Wow. This question really makes me sad unless your under the age of 10. Then you know I can understand. Although one time a friend of my mothers came for a visit (she was 67 at the time) and I had a parrot that said a bunch of words. This woman swore up and down I had a reocording "device" in the cage and birds do not talk. So I guess there are people who just....I don't know, are sheltered?

Yup. Many birds can not fly...well, there are several more. Some small ground dwelling bush birds can not fly and the ostrich can't.

Penguins swimming sure look like they can fly under water though.

Many birds cannot fly and penguins are one of these. They have developed so that instead of using their wings for flying, they use them for swimming.

Yes, it is true. Remember an Ostrich is also a type of bird and so is a flamingo, 2 other types of birds that do not and cannot fly.
