Thank you Jan for taking up for law enforcement. Every state is different but in NC, we can stop someone for an investigative stop, and dont need probable cause. Probable cause would be for a search and seizure. But I truly dont believe the cop would pull someone over for honking if the cop was impeeding traffic. I am however very upset that people think cops can pull you over just because we want to. Cops have alot better things to do than pull you over cause we didnt like something you did. When pulled over we have to call it in, and possibly right a report about it. plus if someoneelse there saw this happen at the intersection and didnt like it we may have to answer to it to our superiors. Cops put there life on the line everyday and a cop is a cop 24/7. Dont get paid much and as shown here dont get respected for what they do. And all because a few immoral people wanna cry everytime we pull you over or question you. Why do we do this again, certainly a fry cook wouldnt be hassled like this.

People believe it or not cops have more to do that mess with someone honking his horn to go. I doubt very much that he would pull him over for that. And by the way 9 years as a district court clerk and I've never had a ticket come through court for "honking" at a police officer..lol.

Someone made a comment that police can do anything thing they want to, that isn't true a Police officer has to have probable cause to make a stop. It could be something simple like driving left of center etc. If they stop you for no good reason you should contact the police department and report him.

Oh they'll pull you over alright. I think it strongly depends on what you look like, at least in L.A. Although I've honked my horn at a few cop cars, I've never been pulled over. I had to! The cop was sitting in a right turn only lane while the light was green for him to go and he had the right away with no pedestrians! I honked twice and he looked up in the rear view, he seemed surprised that someone would actually blow at a cop. Oh well.

He could pull you over to see what the honking was about. Maybe he thought you were trying to get his attention for something? Like some assistance? But if all you did was honk, unless you were breaking some traffic laws also, does not justify getting pulled over. Cops are not mind-readers. They do not know why you were honking at them unless you're trying to flag them down for something.

It somewhat relies upon on the region and way of the occurrence. there could be state regulations, county ordinances, etc. particular on your state that enable cops to tug you over. If there are no regulations bearing directly to honking particularly, it would desire to be construed as some form of noise violation or comparable, somewhat if doing it repeatedly. some regulations are very extensive and permit regulation enforcement to place your habit into categories which it does not unavoidably belong. the certainty is, police be able to tug you over and can declare a variety of violations, which you will or won't be easily committing. Police oversight is little to non-existant on minor stops like this and there is possibly no longer well worth-jointly as criminal recourse different than scuffling with a value tag he wrote if this became the case. i myself have been pulled over and instructed i became doing one ingredient incorrect, and then whilst the value tag comes, it somewhat is for a very separate offense unrelated to the unique declare by using the officer.

Depends.

In Texas, there is no state law about audible signals per Transportation code: CHAPTER 545. OPERATION AND MOVEMENT OF VEHICLES.

However, this may be different for your state or local municipality. There is generally a "Disturbing the peace" law that they can always get you for.

The instant you described above is the correct use of the audible signal and you would not get in trouble for that.

Exception: If he had his overhead lights on then his car is considered, "An official traffic control device." and using your signal would not be justified.

Regardless 99% of the cops won't bother you for that.

My vehicle's horn doesn't work, but if it did I would not honk for that reason. I'd wait a bit longer and try to change into the other lane.

They can pull you over for any reason they want to. Whether you think they have the right or not. They can do anything they want anytime they want. It's easier for them to do something, then ask for forgiveness later. I would blip the horn at him if he's just being normal, but I would never lay on the horn :)

A cop can do anything he/she feels like! It depends on how he/she interprets the honk. Just a reminder: A cop can pull u over for nothing at all and u can be given a bullsh*t ticket for nothing, so............imagine the cop just found out his/her spouse is divorcing them, he/she is on their way home to three kids and then he/she sees some wise-*** kids laughing and honking? Do the math!

Yes, honking your horn at a traffic signal is a violation. You should have flashed your lights.
