I have two weiner dogs and they get along great with my cat. It all depends on how you train and encourage them, they are no worse than any other dog. Make sure you also have plenty of chew toys mine ate through a kitchen chair one day....worse than a termite in my opinion. They also dig so even though it sounds barbaric invest in shock collars if they will be outside alot by itself, a shocking reminder is better than getting run over.
Good luck to you, even with all the problems mentioned they are very caring dogs and make a great companion for anyone.

I have a beagle/dachshund mix and had no trouble when I babysat my boyfriend's cat. If anything she was more scared of the cat than the cat was of her. To be fair though, she is a bit timid and the cat is rather bold. And the cat has lived most of its life with another dog. My boyfriend also has a Lhasa Apso that gets along well with the cat. I think almost any breed of dog can learn to get along with a cat. You just need to make very slow, careful introductions and give everyone their own space to retreat to if need be.

A dach puppy should not have a problem around the cat as long as the cat is tolerant of dogs. My 1st dach was only 6wks old when I brought him home and he got along great with my 2 cats and all of the foster cats that I had. When he died I had 4 cats and a litter of kittens in my house and he was fine with all of them. I recently brought a 7 or 8 year old dach into my house, he was dumped at Petsmart so we have no idea about his past history and he gets along great with all of the cats including 2 of the kittens I still have.

A dachshund, properly trained, will not kill anything.
They were originally bred to hunt badgers, but that has been pretty mush bred out of them over the years.
My doxies have always been easy to train (you must be the "alpha personality) and well behaved. They have NEVER killed anything!

If you get a puppy and let it grow up around the cat you should not have any problems. I have had Dachunds for about 10 years now and they make great pets.

some of my doxies like cats and some want to kill them. depends on the dog. if they are raised together from puppyhood, it should be ok. example: its just like with humans, some people like you, and some don't.
