Grisoft.com is AVG and Microsoft has invested 4 million into it. It's a Chech company and they are very good. Updates the virus data base almost daily. Only a couple viruses since installed 7 months ago. I ran Microsofts online cleaner this weekend and it detected two Trojans and deleted them and cleaned up my registry. Who do you think is distributing viruses on the net? The ones that make money selling antivirus programs? Used to be hackers (college level), but thats way too lame for those guys anymore.

AVG anti-virus, or some other anti-virus program (such as AVAST, which is also free) is certainly a necessity. I'd also recommend that you download and install the free firewall version of Zone Alarm. I wouldn't depend on the Windows firewall...it only protects against incoming threats, and does nothing about any outgoing transmissions from your computer. So, bottom line, use AVG (or AVAST), and also Zone Alarm's free version. Click the two below links: The first for Zone Alarm, and the second for AVG's program. Good luck.

yes AVG is an anti-virus program. One of the best actually.
The best firewall program is zone alarm
Windows has a basic firewall built in and should be turned on by default. However if you want more protection, a stand alone firewall program is a better option.

Yes AVG is an anti-virus program, and it does not need the firewall to operate properly. I use Windows Firewall, and if configured correctly, it works the best.
