It means that you can have fear yet, you don't have to give in to it and run away. You fight your fear with courage, you master it when you conquer your fear.

The bravest of people still feel fear. It's not the lack of fear, but overcoming your fears that makes you courageous.

Meaning....Courage is like your shield....meaning like a knight...before the fight...you shield yourself...."the resistance"....and "the mastery" is the mental ability to overcome the fear.....but none of us are truly absent of fear...that's why they call it courage!

Some people would describe a hero as being "fearless".
But, to me...and, apparently, to Sam Clemens...
a man without fear is a man who lacks both common sense AND imagination.
A hero is someone who is very aware of fear crashing over him like waves, but who takes that one step forward into the ocean, anyway.

Everyone is afraid sometimes, that only makes sense. Having courage doesn't mean that you are not afraid, it means that you do what needs to be done even if you are afraid.
