My sister has a cat who hates me. He hisses and bats his paws at me anytime I come near. Supposedly, he was abused as a kitten. Is there any way to befriend a cat?

Hi Crystal...cats are persnickety and choose their favourite humans. However, humans who ignore them presents no threat which in time they will later come to investigate. For example, have you ever notice people who don't like cats always has cats bugging them? It's because they don't care to look at the cat nor have the desire to touch it. Cats are drawn to people who are like this because it is non-threatening to them.

Once a cat genuinely knows you no longer care for it will it change it's attitude about you. At this point then you'll want to carry in your pocket an open baggy of special cat treats (something different than it's usual food and that is healthy for cats). You don't need to give him any treats just yet. You want to see if the cat will smell you and try to investigate. Only continue to ignore the cat and let it explore and perhaps nuzzle/rub you without reaching to pet him.

On another day repeat this again if or when he rubs you then pull out ONE food treat and place it in the palm of your hand and patiently wait for him to come and investigate. Again don't pet him, you are trying to earn his trust so let him just eat ONE treat from your hand. When he finishes, pull out another treat and wait...over a few days then maybe you can slowly move your other hand to gently pet him while he's eating a treat. If he backs away, back up yourself and give him more time to learn to trust you. Some cats learn to trust quicker than others so remember not to rush him or it will undo your gentle effort.

I hope you will soon both become friends.

The cat likes your sister? Anyway, ask your sister to let you feed the cat. Even if the cat won't let you near at first, if he sees you putting out the food, it should make a good impression. Also, make a purring sound and speak in a high voice. It shows you are friendly. It will probably take patience.

Take your time. Some cats take longer to befriend than others. You just have to adjust to the fact that you won't make friends right off, but you should try and make some friendly overtures over time and get to know him better.

He'll come around to you in due time. Right now, he's just not trusting you. It's his way of saying, "Don't come near me!"

Ah, this is a very good question.

I have cats.

You must let them come to you.

They are extremely independent creatures.

They are not like dogs. They choose their
own actions.

Be patient with them. It may take a long
time to win their trust.

Have fun but be safe.

Give him more priveleges, like letting him sleep in the bread drawer, and up his kitchen status.

0_0 Oh, sorry, a cat? Not a 'The Cheat'? Can't help you there then.

Give it time and dont try to push your self on him. When you go over just ignore him eventually he will relize hat you are not a threat. You also might want to bring treats with you and just toss them to him will eventually associtate you with food/treats and be more willing to accept your presence. Good luck

Don't force yourself on him or try to pet him or play with him. Just ignore him, avoid making eye contact with him, and eventually he will come to you. It could take a very long time, so you'll have to be patient.
