I would love to offer you something for your question Rini, but there is too little that is known. Like if your under a certain age, or how long you have been together would be helpful. If this is your first time, waiting is definitely the way to go if this is something you still have to question yourself about. Can you talk to him about sex? Things such as birth control, what would he do if you were to get pregnant, things of this nature. Not just those questions but can you honestly sit down and have a mature conversation about these things? If you can seriously learn something from or about each other from these conversations, then my next question would be how comfortable do you feel about having sex? If you're still not sure about yourself or him, and there are somethings that leave you feeling uncomfortable it would probably be better to wait until you know for sure and there is not a question in your mind. Good Luck. Just remember if you do what is best for you first then him next he can only respect you more. Easier to respect someone who respects them self.

He is telling you that he will endure the wait for you rather that endure the worse fate of doing without you. He wasn't telling you "good bye", so calm down.
