Honolulu down town after dark is a good area to avoid. Especially around and along Hotel St.
Even all the stores close up between 6/7.

But Waikiki which is actually a part of Honolulu is for most part very safe.
Waikiki is about 6 miles from heart of Honolulu.

If you want to see HONOLULU take a bus from Waikiki. The Bus as it is call. Runs lines 2 13 & B express from Waikiki to Honolulu. Better than driving for parking in downtown Honolulu is hard to find & very expenices.

Island of Oahu has some great places to see. Lot of things to do and enjoy.
But each of the Hawaiian Island is Best in its own way.

On all the islands cost is much cheaper if you get away from the tourist areas.

Go, have fun.

Honolulu is an excellent travel destination. Aside from daily flights to the other Hawaiian Islands the airport is a major hub to travel or depart for anyplace in Asia.

Honolulu is a large city. It had big city crime, traffic, and the other hassles. You can get your passport renewed there though so it is could for taking care of business. I don't think it is a good place for the traveler to stay for any length of time.

Maui and the Big Island of Hawaii are two of the best travel destinations on the planet. Pristine beaches, good climbing and biking, beautiful people, paradise for some.

There is some place you might like better, and most of your friends have probably not been there yet. That is island of Boracay. It is developed, but not your typical crowd here.

Have fun-

The beauty with Oahu is if you don't like Honolulu, you can always hop a transport to the north side of the island for a chance in pace. There are options there- you want the big city- you got it- you want seclusion, with a little drive, you got it.

Warning: if you do go, remember that thievery is the second largest industry in Hawaii, right behind tourism. Know where your wallet is at all times and never ever leave anything of value in your vehicle unattended. Your guard needs to be on from the moment you pull out your ID and credit card at the car rental place at the airport. There may be some dodgy characters behind the counter who may just "forget" to hand back your card and your ID. Be very aware.

In Honolulu you will discover everything from historical landmarks and cherished monuments to world-class shopping and a flourishing arts and lifestyle scene. House to many Oahu's population, the vast town of Honolulu advances throughout the south-eastern shores of Oahu, from Pearl Harbor to Makapuu Point, encompassing world famous Waikiki. Pearl Harbor is among Honolulu's greatest tourist attractions. Although it is home to the Navy's Pacific Fleet, readers may have a tour to start to see the USS Arizona Memorial, and the USS Missouri.

I just came back from Honolulu about a month ago...It's very touristy and crowded and busy...but Hawaii has a magic all it's own...It really depends what kind of vacation you want...if you're young and want naked bodies(who doesn't) body surfing and partying..honolulu is probably where you want to go..or more specifically waikiki..

I prefer the Big Island of Hawaii, it's way less touristy and slightly cheaper, but still with lots of fun stuff to do!
