Thinking outside the box means to step outside your normal train of thoughts, ideas and coming up with something different. Usually, people think only in constrained environments (i.e. look at earlier answers and modify..... looking to give the 'correct answer' rather than the 'spontaneous' answer.... when people are encouraged to think outside the box, these restraints are not there, and come up with answers that they feel is right.

Many people would have asked parents, teacher or older brothers or sister to find explanation your looking for, but you thought outside the box and used something new and different to get answer. looking for news ways to do stuff is thing outside the box. It's also a way to describe nonconformist, rebel people who do and think their own way.
