What are your reasons? Why? How do you deal with this? Is it due to social anxiety or something else? Thanks

I'm single and 42, and have nearly no friends due to people moving away, getting married then fading away to a new social circle, I've had friends who I've stopped talking to due to their being untrustworthy or dishonest. And an ex-husband I left for the same reason (dishonesty). Friends seem to come and go. When I lived in my original home state, I had friends there, but we all grew apart..now that I live across the country from them we don't talk unless I go home to visit. When I was younger, I thought always having friends around me was a "given" but it becomes harder as you age if you've been burned/moved/or haven't made a big effort to keep in touch or cultivate new friendships. If I do make friends, it's through my work, but I've become a creature of habit, and don't vary my daily routine to go out with people much anymore. After night courses in college (online)I am worn out at the end of the day. I would like more friends, and do miss the days when I had a lot of them.

I don't have anyone I would call a close friend. I guess I prefer it that way. When I get home from work at night, I have no desire to socialize, just want to relax with my family. Maybe I need to work on making a friend or two. In fact, I think I will. After all, no man is an island.

I'm 35. I do have close friends, but they're never in my life for very long. Seems like I get really close to people for a short period of time and then something happens and we just stop communicating. It's really frustrating for me. I don't know if it's something I do or if I just hook up with the wrong people. I think just being older makes it hard to make friends in the first place.
I'm trying to get to the bottom of it through therapy. I think in my case, I just need to loosen up. I can be quite negative and tightly wound.
But on the other hand I also think those relationships women have in movies and on Lifetime TV for women are kind of a fantasy. I don't think too many women remain 'BFF' from preschool on. Just like anything else that is in the media, weight, beauty, etc., it makes it harder to deal with what we experience in real life and we start to think of ourselves as abnormal.
hth
good luck!

I had a best friend when I was a kid but as an adult, no, I don't have a best friend, I'm lucky to socialize at all. I go to work, come home, watch tv then go to bed.I do beleive it is a social anxiety but my family also has a history of chronic depression and that is hindering me also. I need to get off my *** and see a therapist but I am a terrible procrastinator....take care

I'm 34 and my best friend is my husband. I really dont have a lot of social friends, sometimes there is too much to deal with the social aspect of having & maintaining friends.

I'm over 40 & I have no-one. No relatives, friends, etc.
The reason: trust (or lack of it). Over the years my friendship has been used, abused & confused by everyone I tried to get close to.

Now I keep away from everyone & keep everyone away from me.

It is so much safer that way.
