Disneyland or Disney World.
I know that seems like a corny answer but, unless your kids are too old (or consider themselves to be too old at any rate), it's a great vacation.
If you go to Disney World in FLorida, there is also EPCOT center which is great for kids and adults alike (you "visit" different countries). The weather in Florida at Christmas is beautiful.
You are certainly not starting too early to book a Christmas vacation. Now's the time to book it and get the deals while they still last. Air flights booked well in advance are much cheaper too.

Listen to JaneB, I was a Disney reservations center rep in the past and magic really is made in the minds of young kids there, they will never ever forget Disney especially if you let the Disney reps plan out a special trip including some of the nicer hotels, kids love the wilderness lodge (log cabin style mansion). Get all the parks and perks and let them run wild.

Disneyland or Disney World is always good option especially with kids. They will like it much. Be ready to spend a couple of days there as one will not be enough. Also the holiday period may have more visitors too and you will need to wait for the rides.
But the kids will love it, no matter the delays!

Where are you now How many kids How much do you think you'll be able to afford Will you need passports for you and the kids How long would your vacation be.Without this data,I'd have no idea.I can give you my advice if you wish.Having said that,I'll tell you the least expensive holidays are in your homeland

Ask them where they would like to go. Any kid is going to say Disney World or Land, but think twice, Christmas is peak PEAK season for those places, you'll pay premiums for hotels, everything will be mobbed as well. It really depends on what your family enjoys doing, how old your kids are, etc. etc. And it's not too early to be booking travel for Christmas, it's a heavy travel season.

Washington, DC has more free stuff than you can shake a stick at, for example the Air and Space Museum, the National Gallery of Art and tons of other good stuff, even pandas.
