What is the purpose of a tail on some animals????

Weapon
To express themselves
Warmth
Signal to other animals
Ward off insects
To keep cool
To hold things (certain creatures)
Used as a tool

To name a few off the bat (depending on what animal the tail is attached to of course)!

there are many different reasons, balance would be the most common, i suppose.

Some animals would be as a weopon or defense, like a scorpion's tail with stinger.

I would also guess it serves the purpose of helping store an animals scent for mating and identification purposes.
