I'm on my 3rd day of not smoking and asked a similar question. Lots of people gave some good advice. Whenever I feel the urge, I'm going to read my answers. good luck.

If you have pain in your chest when you smoke that is very helpful in keeping you on track. You may not have that pain, but keep thinking about the pain you do suffer, the coughing in the morning, or whatever. In other words, when you think about cigarettes think about the negative. I did quit cold turkey, but that was the only choice back then. One trick I found very helpful was to make a habit of not buying or carrying cigarettes, and if somehow I did get some throwing them away. (this works with liquor too). Obviously, you need to not be bumming cigarettes either. Think about how cheap and foolish you are to do that. The thing about not buying cigarettes is that the buying is at least a little painful so that is a good place to intervene if you start back up again. Likewise if you have started again and feel disgusted that is a good time to throw them in the stove (I have a wood stove) and then if you want more you would have to buy them. You just set up a steady negative wind... Good luck! You'll be feeling a lot better in just a few months.

Congratulations! You are on the right path. As time goes along the cravings do get less, say about 2 weeks. When you get a craving find something else to do, something to keep your hands and mouth busy. eat a piece of celery or a fruit. The craving only lasts for about 5 minutes or so and if you can get through that you're all set. I smoked for 35 years and stopped 4 years ago. I still sometimes get the urge but not very often. I always think about the smell (yuck) and how expensive cigarettes are and my grandchildren. I want to be here to see them grow up. I'm rooting for you!

Good for you!! I quit cold turket a long time ago and am so happy that I did and wouldn't think of smoking again. I must be weird because when I quit, I didn't have cravings. Other people I know who have quit did but they went away eventually. What worked best for them was to get something elso to do with their hande when they had the urge to smoke or chew gum. Something to distract the mind.

it will take awhile and buy some nicotine patches that can help you stop smoking. and live one day at a time and put one foot in front of the other and if you fall pick yourself up and dust yourself off and continue that path of quit smoking.

My husband gave up smoking in 92 and he says he still thinks about it. Three years after he quit we were out and a friend who smokes offered him a cigarette and he started smoking it without thinking.
It is a power habit as you know, try chewing gum or sucking on lollipops. Good luck.

Let's fight this monster together. It is very hard to quit. The only way is to keep fighting. I have a quitting buddy. He used to smoke every 20 minutes. Then he got told he had mouth cancer in July. So we quit the same day.

First off congrats on quiting.

Second. Remember you are quiting a 30 year habbit. It will take some time for you to get rid of the cravings.

Try putting a hard tack candy in your mouth when you get the cravings or drinking a glass of grapefurit juice.

The first month is the hardest.

The first week is excurtiating.

After that it's general stress. If you lose your job or girl/boyfriend expect to walk 1,000 miles for a smoke.
