u hope to have a better life in the next life, but u could have been bad in the life before this one, and not pay for it now because u are good but pay for it later with the next life, that 's how karma works, and it explains why u see some people get away with everything and some people suffer horribly, from past actions. there is no set time when you reap what u sow

Not even a Buddhist. An atheist, Jews, Christians, Islams everyone. It depends on their karma ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karma_in_Buddhism ). If they do so many good things and just a bit bad things, they will go to a better place. But remember the better places are not eternal for buddhis. After a very long time later, they will ended there and continue their cycle of life to other realm and born as another personality. That will happened more and more till they reach the Nibbana.

Every birth is conditioned by a past good or bad karma, which predominated at the moment of death. Karma that conditions the future birth is called Reproductive Karma. The death of a person is merely ‘a temporary end of a temporary phenomenon’. Though the present form perishes, another form which is neither the same nor absolutely different takes its place, according to the potential thought-vibration generated at the death moment, because the Karmic force which propels the life-flux still survives. It is this last thought, which is technically called Reproductive (janaka) Karma, that determines the state of a person in his subsequent birth. This may be either a good or bad Karma.

A happy rebirth is only guaranteed upon the attainment of the first stage of enlightenment. Even if you live a good life this time, a bad karma from a distant past life could fruit and lead to a lower rebirth. The attainment of enlightenment (irreversibly perfect mental health) is an urgent necessity.

The concept of reincarnation is that where you end up in your next life is affected by what you do in this life. If you are bad in this life, your next life will be filled with hardships. If you are good, your next life will blessed. It has nothing to do with what you want, it's about what you do.
