I don't think there is a definitive answer yet, but I did read a medical study that was done in London over a period of 12 years.
In the study they took pregnant women and using their sonograms recorded which babies sucked their left thumb and which sucked the right thumb. The followed these children through early development. The results were kind of wild, all that sucked their left thumb became left handed and the one that sucked the right became right handed.
I think it would be kind of strange personally if it turned out to be inherited. My brother and I are both left handed, and are the only living family members to be left handed, in our genealogy book the last lefty in our family was still living in Greece in the 1700's.
Hope this helped some. :)

It can be. Genetic lefties usually are left-eye dominant and left-foot dominant. There is some evidence that the gene for left handedness is grouped with nearsightedness and math ability.
Some lefties are made--in other words, something happens before birth to change the dominant side of the brain in some ways, but it's not based on anything genetic. These people may have a strong preference for using their left hands, but their right eyes will be dominant. Someone like this might be equally comfortable using left or right handed golf clubs when first learning the sport.

I watched a report that suggested there is a recessive left handed gene. This means if you have one gene that states right handedness, the recessive one (the left hand gene) will be blocked. It is when you have both genes as left hand genes that it has a chance of showing.
Even then, the report said, it will depend on how the child is raised (e.g. how to hold objects, encouraged/discouraged to use left hand, etc.)
The report was from Daily Planet, a science news broadcast from Discovery Channel, but I can't locate the article. Here is one that is talks about it, but it is rather wordy.
Now glancing at the report, it suggestes that there are genetic lefties and learnt lefties! Interesting!

If I had to guess from mere observation, I would say yes. My mum is left-handed and my dad right. I have a lot of siblings and we have a high occurence of left-handedness (50%). I have a few nieces and nephews 1/4 are lefties. I know my maternal grandma was a lefty (the other grands died before I was born).
Science is currently searching for evidence but so far nil.

I am the only left handed person in my family that anyone can remember (including cousins)
But remember, not to long ago, left handed children were basically tought to use their right (that would explain some bad handwriting - wouldn't it?) hand for everything. More out of ignorance - teachers not knowing how to teach penmanship to lefties.

It can be, but not always. Nobody else in my immediate family is lefty but me. But my boyfriend is lefty and so is his mom. It has to do with the side of the brain that is used. They say lefties are 'right-brained,' and vice versa.
Also, lefties make up less than 5% of the population, but more than 30% of artists are left-handed. It's tough being so awesome.

Not really. Being right-handed isn't inherited, so why would being left-handed be. Besides, left-handed children can be reconditioned to use their right hands as their "main hand" if the parents start early enough.
