I have taken a number of pictures on the lowest resolution of my digital camera. I have been told of a way to increase that resolution without having a special program. Does anyone know how to do this?

You really can't do this with satisfactory results.
In the future, use the best setting on your digital camera.
There is a program (among others) called s-spline that can help somewhat, enough for some uses, but again, nothing is going to be the same as the photo taken at higher resolution to begin with.

Any image editing program can increase the resolution, but there isn't really a good reason to do so. Increasing the resolution decreases the image quality and increases the file size, so you really don't want to do it. For example, each number below represents a different colored pixel of a 2 x 1 picture

12

When you increase the resolution, most programs have to compensate. If you increased the resolution to 4 x1, most double the pixels like this:

1122

so your not gaining any quality, and you are increasing the amount of information that has to be stored by increasing the resolution.

Think about it... U took a picture (captured x number of pixels) all arranged in a specific order.. Now U want to expand those pixels... where would the pixels needed to fill the gaps come from..... Only a morphing type of app could assist u in performing this.

I found out about a technique called "Super Resolution" that uses multiple low-res images to make a hi-res one. Here's a link http://www.soe.ucsc.edu/~milanfar/SR-Software.htm. Alternatively, you can try to visit microsoft site, i have seen some good application in their research center.
