Three friends check into a hotel for the night. The clerk tells them the bill is $30, payable in advance.
They each pay the clerk $10 and go to their room.
A few minutes later, the clerk realizes he has made an error and overcharged the men by $5.
He asks the porter to return $5 to the friends.
The porter sees this as an opportunity to make $2 as he reasons that the three friends would have a tough time dividing $5 evenly among them; so he decides to tell them that the clerk made a mistake of only $3, giving a dollar back to each of the friends.
He pockets the leftover $2.
Now, that each of the three has got a dollar back, they each have paid $9 for the room which is a total of $27 for the night.
We know the porter pocketed £2 and adding that to the $27, you get $29, not $30 which was originally spent.
Where did the other dollar go?
GOOD LUCK ALL

There is no extra dollar.
Logic:
Each man gave a total of 10 dollars to the clerk- +30
Clerk gave 5 dollars to the porter to return (30-5=25)
Porter pockerts 2 dollars (5-2=3)
Each man gets a dollar 3/1=3
So lets add up the tottal that each person has:
Clerk +25
Porter +2
Each Man +3
Total: 30
Did I get it?

Nothing is missing!
Three friend paid $10 each (10x3 =30)
Clerk returned $5 (30-5=25)
Porter pocketed $2 (30-2=28)
Each got $1 back (1x3=3)
Total= 25+3+2 =30
Each paid $9, that is $27
minus that $2 which is pocketed by Porter (27-2=25)
They totally paid $25 for the room

Well, if they each paid 10 dollars, that would make 30. the clerk gives back 5 dollars, making the total 25 dollars. that means 2 of the men paid 8 dollars, and 1 person paid 9, meaning that one person in the end still paid one more dollar then the other, and the porter should have kept 3 dollars for it to be even. its not explained very well, but that's the answer. :]

The answer is your math is wrong! Nothing happened to the other dollar!
If the room was originally thirty dollars and then the clerk subtracted five dollars that left the bill at 25 dollars! If the porter pocketed two dollars and gave the men three dollars back then 25 +3=28 dollars and you add the two dollars the porter pocketed that adds up to 30 dollars!

if the clerk overcharged them by $5 then the total for the night would be $25 so the porter gave each of them $1 wich totals to $28 and he has the other $2

Each man paid $9 which equals $25 for the room and $2 that the bellboy kept equalling $27. The $2 is in the $27 dollars. And you do not have to add the $2 again to the 27. If you want to know where the money is .... you add the $3 returned to the men, plus $25 for the room, plus $2 for the bellboy to add up to $30.

Here is a v simple answer:
The men spent $9 x 3 = $27
Of this, the hotel got $25. The porter got $2.
Spent $$$ = received $$$$ = $27
Output = Input. No mystery.
