I was the Battalion Commander of my ROTC unit back in high school and was in charge of training both the color guard and drill teams. I will tell you that being on the color guard is like a badge of honor. If you are allowed to be a member of your color guard I would highly suggest that you take advantage of this. The color guard is responsible for the presentation of the "Colors" (flags) of your country and state; some schools display their school flag as well.

Now as for the drill team, this is where the fun begins. Don't worry about spinning the rifle, after you have learned how to do it you will find that it is very easy to do. The rifle is not as heavy as it look, and spinning and throwing it around is not as difficult as it looks. Trust me, like I said, the drill team is where the fun begins. You will be amazed by how much fun you will have performing in front of audiences and competitions.

My best suggestion for you would be to try out for both. The basic things that you will have to learn will be pretty much the same; including marching and standard drill movements.

If you would like to talk more about this just e-mail me through my profile. Like I said I loved being a part of the drill team and color guard at my school. I commanded the drill team which was awarded as the number one team in the city during numerous competitions; I was also a member of the color guard which was honored as being the official color guard of both our city and county mayors.

I was the Battalion Commander of the high school JROTC battalion my senior year, so I was over both of those teams. Color guard is more precice, and slower, and in my opinion, easier. Drill Team is fast paced, and a lot more fun! I was on drill team for 3 years, and it was the most fun I had in high school. Good luck on your decision!
