I'm a 15 yr. old female and don't have much of a future. If my brothers and i don't wanna be working on the streets or in our "christian" parents' ministry we have no options. hey, my parents discourage college...we hope we can even get a GED! I'm with my supportive Grandma & she wants me to look at my future so i am. The military sounds great. I know i can handle it (if i get a damn ged) but what branch? Any advice or opinions other than see a recruiter (my uncle is one). anything i should know about the military? helpful tips would be nice. thanks to everyone who answers.

Coast Guard has the best all around program, but is very difficult to get into.

Air Force seems to have just about the best of everything. Excellent training, good food and most intelligent over all personnel.

The Army is next, but more dangerous and harder physical training.

The Navy is good, if you don't mind being stuck on a ship for months at a time.

The Marines are the most challenging of all the services, you have to be intelligent, sharp, physically fit, able to think on your feet and able to obey orders without question.

Well...if lack of financial support from your parents if you want to go to college is the issue there are ways the military can help you with that. You can go to college and enroll in ROTC and get your college paid for. When you graduate you have a four year obligation but you will go in as an officer (after OCS). The other way is to join the reserves. Go to boot camp followed by training for your MOS (could be anywhere from 3-12 mos), come back home and then enroll in school. The service will pay for your college as a member of the reserves. You are only obligated to go to one weekend drill a month and two weeks in the summer. If you want to enlist outright there are a variety of jobs in all branches of service that depends on your aptitude and interests. Be wary of some recruiters that claim ONLY they can offer you certain things. Everyone seems to feel the air force has the best schools but this is not necessarily true. The navy has some excellent schools. The air force does seem to often offer nicer living accommodations for their personnel but remember that they usually have no problem filling their recruiting needs and at times drastically limit recruiting. In fact they are now in kind of a military type of lay off, where some are having to transfer to the army to be able to stay in the service. You still have a few years to think about it. Get some literature on various career opportunities from your uncle and recruiters from other branches and think about what you are interested in. You can find books in the library that describe training and the life in different jobs in the military. Now enjoy being 15. Good luck.

For starters, I have been in the Air Force for 20 + years and before that I was in the Army for a short stint. As for what is the better branch...well each one has its pluses & minuses. I have worked with all branches over the years and I personally feel the USAF is the better of the bunch for many reasons. The AF has a much higher standard of living and puts alot of money into our quality of life. The AF also has some of the most technologically advanced jobs in the military, and you have a much better chance to take college classes after your initial training schools. All of the branches have 100% tuition assistance while you are in the military (essencially free college). Some of the jobs I would recommend...if you like flying, in-flight refueler "boom operator", load master or if you like computers I would go into prgrammer or network administrator or if you like medical I would recommend surgical technician or diagnostic imagry (MRI, x-ray, ultra sound technicians). To sum this up...you will live better, get treated better, have a better selection of jobs and just have a better experience by joining the Air Force. Best of luck and I hope everything works out for you.

not the Army, Air Force is better quality of life, Make sure you do good on the ASVAB. Once the recreuiter offers you a "job" the description may be "shady" so do your research before saying yes to any kind of job. Stick with Air Force. I am a girl and Army is not the way to go for a girl. i gotta live with that everyday. Army not bad AF is just way better.

My son is in the Navy, attached to a Marine unit. He has told me many stories about how poorly the Marines are treated compared to the Navy, his equipment is better (even for the same job), how many former Marines, enlist in the Navy etc.

He loves the Navy, says the food is great. He gets treated well. He has his own room, he shares a bathroom with one other person.

He is in Georgia. A hours from Orlando.

You can use the GI Bill when you get out for your college education.

First of all, PLEASE get your high school degree. It is extremely hard to get in with a GED. The Air Force sounds right for you. They have plenty of good jobs and its alot easier than the other services.

Musicman seems to have a good description. Althought I wouldnt say the Air Force has the best of everything. They probably have the best stuff as far as equipment.

My husband says the Air Force is best for women. I believe him. He is in the Army National Guard and his sister was in the Navy. She was given a really hard time.

who cares what your parents think about college. when you get to the level of thinking of which college to go to, it'll be your first adult decision. parents want kids to never leave their side. but we are freebirds, and we need free flight. military is great. but education will take you farther in life. see if you can go to college first then if eveything is F.U.B.A.R'ed (****** Up Beyond All Recognition) THEN, try the military. just remember education is important.

I joined the US ARMY and I would recommend that. They have great incentives and actually want you to get some college under your belt. I say go ARMY
