I really enjoy the sport (indoor only, thus far), and want to get great at it. What can I do?

ooh totally do finger excercises. i know that sounds stupid but its a really important part of climbing. theres usually a climing section at most outdoor shops and they sell squishy rubber balls that you use and also plastic balls that have a string inside them that you pull to increase resistance whichreally strengthens the tendons in your wrist and lower arm...good luck and keep climbing!!

Look at a rock-climbing site, or maybe ask a fitness trainer. You might be able to get in touch with a rock-climber expert and they could tell. I would look for exercises that focus on leg and arm strength - as well as abs. Basically the whole body...:D Have a great day!

Like you said, you will learn a lot during your course. I always recommend "Mountaineering: Freedom of the Hills" as the best book for novice or experienced climbers. It is very thorough and is written in a way that anyone can understand (with TONS of pictures). It has everything from the most very very basic concepts to advanced climbing techniques. It encompasses camping, backpacking, rock climbing, ice climbing, and mountaineering. You will be happy you read it.
