What Peach said. I got one through Capital One at 17 with my father as a cosigner. Check with your bank or credit union to see if they have any programs for minors. Some local banks and credit unions in my area do and also teach about how to use credit properly.

Just remember that even though you are under 18 you are already starting to build a credit history by having that credit account. If you use that credit card wisely, that will help you in the future when you want to get a car loan or money for school or further down the road to buy a home but if you keep spending and can't keep up with payments, your credit history will suffer and you will have a harder time getting a good deal or any deal on a loan.

Legitimate credit card companies can not and will not enter into a legal financial contract with anyone under 18.

Also, there is no such thing as a co-signer on a credit card. You can be added as an authorized user on your parents credit card, but you cannot get one on your own or as joint until you are 18. As an authorized user you will get a card in your name to use, but you are not financially responsible for the balance on the card.

The problem with most jurisdictions is that you cannot enter into a contract with a minor. The contract would be unenforceable, no matter if the minor fully agreed and signed. Therefore, if a minor were to get a card, max it out and refuse to pay, there is pretty much nothing the card company can do.

Having said that, there is one way to get a credit card. Get an adult (usually a parent) to make you an authorized user. That way, you get your own card with your name on it, and the adult is fully responsible for all charges & interest.

Most credit card companies don't care how old you are - and poor credit does NOT jump off your record once you turn 18.

I must disagree with lady01love, as I know of several people who have co-signed for minors.

As a matter of fact, it's recommend that you get minors a card as soon as possible to help establish a credit rating.

I am sure that there are but why would you want one? Credit is a very very dangerous tool. If you need to buy something on credit you should probly not be buying it in the first place.
