Take the dog for a walk every afternoon for 30-45 minutes.

German Shepherd's often have some good retrieving ability or are somewhat more inclined to take direction and cooperate. So some of the exercise can be divided between walks, and playing fetch or frisbee. These games will give the dog a good cardio and hard muscle work out. Going for walks doesn't really address the need for bursts of energy that many dogs need to stay in good shape. But good workouts will keep the dog more content, less destructive.

If you have a large yard, the dog can also get exercise trotting around the yard and watching people, traffic and birds go by.

I have a pet sitting buisiness and the dogs I usually bring them out and walk them a total of 6 km a day with a total of 1hr 30min - 2hrs. The dogs get a full excercise and they end up being well behaved after each walk and listen better when training.

it really depends on the dog.Age and over-all health are big factors and to prevent injuries you have to start out slow. But my rule is -If what exercise they get does'nt result in a 2 hr.nap it was'nt enough.
I started mine on a 30 minute walk around the dog park as pups.We covered about a half mile with them off-leash so they went much farther. As they grew I increased their walks to 45 min.and we walked about 1 1/2 miles. Now they're both adults we walk about 3 miles with them off-leash and are working our way up to 5miles.
On top of this they have their own swimming pool they play in and a large fenced yard they refuse to enjoy unless I'm outside with them to toss a ball.So after our walk which takes anywhere from an hour and a half to two hours I play with them outside for at least 15 minutes 3-4 times a day.

It would depend on the individual dog, I own 15 German Shepherds and they are all a little different.Shepherds are a herding breed and need to have something to do, they require a lot of attention. Have you considered getting another shepherd, they do really well when they have another dog around.

It would be great for the dog if you took him out twice a day, try for 1 1/2 hours per day, assuming this is a healthy dog. If he's not used to walking, he has to be built up to longer distances just like a person would.
