You can do it yourself - it's not difficult, and you have to provide all of the information to the attorney anyways - If you already have the employer who will sponsor you, it makes it that much easier. If not, go to Canada first, easier to get to US from Canada than from Mexico first (if coming from Mexico).

Why does everyone think it is easier to get into Canada? It isn't...my husband is currently trying right now and the government roadblocks are amazing....
Now to answer the question.... if you are unsure in any way about the whole process it is probably better to find a lawyer. But becareful of lawyer that promise you quick results for little money. Because that money will be gone, quicker than you will get in the country. Do your homework with lawyers....

A lawyer can help you through all obstacles, but diy can be just as good. I would recommend NOLO's Immigration book. You can find it on Amazon. Just read it and follow the questions. For each yes or no answer you give, it will tell you if you need a lawyer. Also, it will explain U.S. laws in plain English. Makes it easier on us non-lawyer types.

I'd go for the lawyer because they know more about the process and the legality of everything.

There is an old saying...penny wise and dollar foolish...
Spend the money on the lawyer. A good one will streamline everything and you will be ahead...in the long run.
Good luck.
