on mac os x, what is x11 and why does open office require it?

As far as I understand, it's a basis for GUI (Graphical User Interface) development. Basically it allows the windows to be made and all that good stuff. I have it on my Mac and I believe I got it from the apple site (http://www.apple.com/)
