Anybody here who is or was a Gunners Mate?

I would like to know some insight about what GM's do?
Is it fun or what?

Gunner's Mates (GM) work with guns and ammo. They can either be in the armory and deal with the small arms (pistols, rifles, and shot guns), or work in the gun mount on the big guns. I was not a GM, but was a FC (Fire Controlman) working on the Mk 86 Gun Fire Control System. I worked closely with the GMs on the ship. I maintained the system that aimed and fired the 5 inch guns, and the GMs maintained and loaded the guns.

To be good at it, you should have good mechanical aptitude, and not mind getting really dirty and greasy. They work on mechanical systems that require lubrication, and a lot on hydraulic systems.

As far as being fun or not, that would depend on your idea of fun. I did help them on occasion, and I enjoyed it.
