I have ingrown toenails all the time. I can usually take care of them myself but it sure is a pain to deal with. I have been trying to keep them longer so that they can't grow into my skin. But I recently decided that if I file my fingernails, why can't I file my toenails, just the corners really, to keep the sharp corners from growing into my skin. Anyone done this before or got any advice on why or why not to do this?

I am a toe dancer of 25 years (shoes to dance on the top of your toe) and have always have had problems with my toenails. (Like any dancer would) Anywho, fortunatelinn had a great solution! Cut a "V" in the middle of the toenail until the nails move out of the sides of your toe then start cutting then straight across! DO NOT CURVE THEM! This causes ingrown toenails! Your toenails should be 1/16 to 1/8 inch longer then the top of your toe. NEVER shorter than your toe! Good Luck!

there are only two "secrets" to preventing ingrown toenails. 1. Cut your nails square across the end of the toe. Never cut the nail back behind the tip of the toe. 2. Wear shoes that have a wide "box", or toe. Never get shoes that squeeze the toes together. If you have any question about this, ask your family doctor about it at your next visit. I have to agree with, though. The best treatment is prevention.

Bad idea good thought! Let your toe nails grow long enough to cut a V shaped notch in the middle of the nail. It will pull the sides out of your toe, unless it's too far gone, and as it grows out the ingrown nail will come out.
If this doesn't help, go see a DR.!!

The only way to get rid of a ingrown toenail for good is to get it operated on or grow it out. Both hurt like hell.

it is good to cut your toe nails not only to prevent ingrown toenails but also to possibly ascertain healthiness

I've heard that one should cut or file them square, not round, in order to prevent in-grown nails. By this logic, corners shouldn't be filed.
