Visa, MasterCard and Discover all have 16 numbers (usually). American Express cards usually have 15 numbers. There are exceptions to each of those rules, and they only apply in the US (I think).

Example: Would be 1234 5678 9012 3456

All the different credit card companies use a different and very complex mathematical formula to get thier card numbers. That is why all the machines and websites know immediately whether or not you have a real number. If you look hard enough on the internet you can find someone who has figured out the formula and can generate a bunch of false numbers.

16 numbers and sometimes there is a 3 digit code on the back of the card that companies will ask for as well when you order something
