I think the key is whether you have been away from home just for a short while, or for a long while.
I left home to go overseas for studies, and the first few weeks were not easy, but with good friends in my new environment, I managed it through. I would think it is normal to feel homesick shortly after leaving home, and that as you adapt and with the help of new friends, you get used to not being home.
However, if you have been away from home for a long while, and this bout of home sickness hits you for no apparent reason, then, if it lasts a couple of days or so, I think you should go home, even for a short vacation.
It is not easy living away from home, and when our roots hurt, it is time to dip them back in home soil, even if it's only for a while. It feels so much better.

The feeling of homesickness is caused by a form of grieving for all the things that you left behind that made you feel safe, secure and loved.
The best way to combat it is to focus on making lots of positive steps forward in the new life that you have now, for instance, making new friends, finding new places to go out for a drink or getting involved in your local community.
The more things in the present you have to occupy yourself, the less you will focus on the things you left behind.
Don't give into these feelings of homesickness, otherwise you will never move forward in life.

i've spent many years living away from home in different places. what i've found is that home sickness has little to do with home and everything to do with where your currently living annd the situation that you find yourself in. home will always have a certain significance but when our home, work and personal life are going good, i dont find homesickness to be an issue. when things arent so good home seems like the best place on earth

I think most times it fades with time. However, I relocated from Vt 3 years ago, and I am still homesick. I think it depends on if you ever wanted to leave home in the first place.

It will go away when you find new places and friends that suit you: in my view, homesickness is a positive sign that you love your home and your people very much. You'll continue to do so even in agreeable new places and among new friends, but the nagging sickness will go away!

It means that you have people that you miss and obviously love.... That's so special.
Go home when you have done what you need to do, while away from home, so you don't worry about leaving unfinished business when you DO go home.
There's no place like home, so do go home eventually.
