Your son doesn't have to take your fiance's last name. If he is adopted by your (soon-to-be) husband, he will be his son no matter what his name is. If your fiance gives you a hard time about this, maybe you should re-think marrying him.

I would wait until you had been married a couple of years before making this decision. There really is not big hurry, anyway. And like someone else said, he could adopt him and allow him to keep your maiden name. But honestly, if your marriage is really stable I would let him adopt and take his name. I just think it would give you more stability as a family.

I am in a similar situation. My father had only girls (5 of them) so the family name does not carry on but one thing that you can do is just add fiancees name like if fiancees name is smith have it like: John Erik Doe-Smith. This way your family name carries on and you show that you have a wonderful man in your life that has taken on the responsibility for a child that he loves but is not naturally his. My daughter is not my husbands but she tells everyone that mommy got off the path so God brought her daddy late but he is her daddy and god brought him back. You are very blessed to have found not only someone to love you unconditionally but also accept and love your son unconditionally. Embrace that and allow him to be the father that he wants to be to the son you both love so very much. Good Luck

It may be possible for your fiance to adopt your son and your son keep the name he already has. You will have to talk to a lawyer. Explain to your fiance that it's important to you that your son carries on your family name.

Once you get married, let him adopt. Keep his name as your family name. If your fiance truly loves him, he'll understand. You may want to add your fiance's last name as a middle name out of appreciation.

I would say if you let him adopt him keep is last name (your father's last name)

Just have something like example: John Smith-Hamton

There is no problem with him having 2 last names.

I feel for your dad but if this guy of yours is stepping up to be a dad when its not his child. His wanting the name change is a very small request and I think if you told him no he would be extreemly hurt. I think you should tell your dad and hope he would understand.

I was planning on doing the same thing and in the same exact situation.....look, honestly (woman to woman talk) if you are having doubt...dont do it. We are talking about a child here not a pet.

I wouldnt do it.

Let him have your husbands name; your father will understand. You need to be loyal to your husband, not your dad.
