Not very often. She just started at a private school and they don't even have a playground. They have recess in the basement of the school and that is right after lunch.

My son will get 3 a day- one in the morning, one during lunch, and a short afternoon one.
My oldest daughter graduated to a new school, starting next week. I'm not sure how often she'll get recess, but I know she has at least 1 at lunch time.
My youngest daughter is in preschool starting Tuesday, and will have only 1 short recess, but she's only at school for 3 hours, and it's more play than teaching, at least at first.

My DD in in 2nd grade. She gets a 15 min recess in the morning, no recess at lunch (they just get 25 min to eat) and then MAYBE a 15 min recess in the afternoon, but probably not. They do have 20 min for PE though.

there are legal requirements that all children must receive a braek of some kind during the school day. Many schools and parents are opting to do more of a "coffee break" type scenario in the classrooms for more time on task. Others advocate that children need the fresh air and exercise. It was my opinion that children under the fifth grade were required to have two fifteen minute breaks (one morning and one afternoon) and a forty five minute lunch period with at least fifteen minutes free time.
It may differ from state to state.
Ask the school board. Or go on line to find out about your state.

I just asked my son this question the other day...he is in the 5th grade. He said they only get a lunch recess, but in the morning and afternoon they get free time in the classroom to do whatever they want. I would much rather he be outside getting fresh air and some exercise. Schools are so restricted these days.

At our school (melbourne Australia) they start school at 9am and work till 11am, then have a 30 min. recess (which includes their morning tea at about 10.55pm). Then they work from 11.30-1.30 (most schools it's 1pm but ours trialled 1.30 and it worked better) they have lunch from 1.30-1.40 (unlike America and England all kids bring their lunch from home, our school has no canteen but every second monday is special lunch which is ordered the previous week and brought to the classroom by the mums rostered on for that meal. Next Monday they have a choice of a meat pie or a sausage roll. It changes every fortnight so they only have the same thing twice a year. Parents cook it (if needed) and put it together(in the case of things like salad rolls) for the classes). Then play till 2.30pm. Back in class till 3.30 then home
