Ok, forget the "kind of" part....I have a heavy southern accent. I want to get rid of it. I'm an intelligent and thoughtful person and would like for my voice to echo that. Any ideas on how to improve my speech? Thanks!

ok, well maybe not get rid of it completely (which would probably be impossible any how), but make it lighter. My mom's boyfriend is from New York and he has trouble understanding me sometimes...but that goes both ways, I have trouble understanding his 'Brooklyn' accent also, lol.

No disrespect to people from the South, but the southern accent does make many people sound less intelligent. It is a stereotype, but there is some truth to every stereotype. Otherwise that stereotype wouldn't have been created. If you want to ease your accent I'm sure there are voice exercises you could do. I do find that if you move out of a region that has a different accent than yours you will eventually pick up on that accent. For instance, I know a few people who moved to England and they picked up the British accent after a year. They came back to the United States 2 years later and have been back for almost 5 and they still have a slight British accent. But you don't need to change your accent. You know you are an intelligent person.

WHOA, WHOA!!! HELLO, HEL-- NO!!!!!! The Beach boys and Van Halen both sang a song about the the the way the girls down south talk really drives me wild .!!!! Guys LOVE A GIRL WITH A SOUTHERN ACCENT!!!! All the country singers that are women make record sales soar thru the roof!!!! I personally love to hear a southern girl say my name. Honey if y'all got flaunt it and thank the GOOD LORD y'all got it .I married a southern girl and the second thing that attracted me to her was her accent. All you need to do to look and act impressive is to walk tall and act confident, look people in the eye when you speak

I have accent too. Usually people say it sounds nice. But some people think because I have this heavy accent I'm dumb nd would not hire me for upper level job altho I have been well
educated. I feel like I am a dumb blonde joke altho I know being blonde does not mean you are dumb anymore than having an accent means your dumb. Most of time I enjoy my accent & when I am around people who have same accent (family members & friends) it gets worse for a time.

how dumb or bad you sound depends on what part of the country you live in. If you were intelligent and thoughtful in the south you are still the same in another part of the country even if you use words that are not in use in another part of the country.
check your phone book under speech lessons. most people if they stay in the same other place will slowly lose their accent as you pick up the local lingo.

I think a Southern accent sounds nice, it doesn't make you sound less thoughtful or intelligent in the least. I say be proud of your Southern heritage!

Honey, you are trying to fix something that is not broken. It's your accent and there is nothing wrong with it. We all have different accents and none is better than other. I pretty sure that can speak more proper than some people in the city.

and who said southern women were not intelligent. we are very proud of our southern roots and the way we speak. just because we sound deep south does not imply in no way no intelligence. if you want to improve your speech for career reasons, go ahead, but never be ashamed of your heritage.
let God's light shine in all you do.
blessed be,
Elizabeth

Accents are a hard thing to get rid of -especially when you get excited about things. I can get people who have lost their accents to pick them up when they start talking about home.
