Meditation is *a* way, but not *the* way to stay mentally healthy.

Meditation is a way of clearing away our "talkative" minds. When there are no thoughts, there is silence and freshness in our psyche.
To stay mentally healthy, we have to be aware of, and understand our habitual ways of thinking and attitude in our behavioral responses to various circumstances.
Change our thoughts, we change our lives.

Yes. But it truly depends on who you are as a person. If you're an angry person, or possess a chemical imbalance, meditation will make your conditions worse if you break. It'll be more blatant, and obvious and annoy you more if something wrongs you, or is a pet peeve of yours. If you hold out and don't react to it, eventually it will dissipate and never bother you again, but it does get very powerful, bigger and bigger, until it's finally past you. It takes much discipline, or better to say Patience. With patience and persistance. You're destined for success.

Yes! It keeps your mind sharp, because it requires a lot of concentration. It also keeps you aware of your surroundings, or to phrase it differently, keeps your mind alert and ready.
