Symptoms of tapeworm infection

Most tapeworms live in the small intestine of the final host, the cat. Heavy infestations in this area may cause diarrhoea, occasionally vomiting when large sections of the tapeworm may be vomited, unthriftiness and weight loss. More commonly low infestations can ocasionally cause anal irritation with the cat licking and chewing around the anal area or scooting (dragging backside along the ground). This is due to expulsion of the tapeworm segments which due to their sticky nature often attach to the skin and hair around the backside. When they first emerge they have a pearlescent white colour and contract along their length looking at times like a miniature dumb-bell. The contractions of the segment are highly irritating to the cat. After a while they dry and shrivel. A lot of people compare them with a grain of rice which changes from white to yellow with time.

Sometimes you can find tapeworm segments around the pet's anus. When they are dried, they look like rice corns. Check the pet's stool, sometimes you can find the segments on top of it. The tapeworm grows and the segments are braking off, which are filled with eggs. A Pet can have more than just one tapeworm. The pet needs to get de-wormed by a Veterinarian, because the stuff that you can buy at the pet store doesn't work on the Flea Tapeworm. Fleas are the host for getting Tapeworms.

It will look like they have dried rice stuck on their behind. Tape worms break off into segments and then stick to the fur. They are more disgusting than harmful.

You will most likely see "segments". These segments are small, flat, white, rice-shaped things in their poop and/or around their anus.

If you suspect your dog of having tapeworm infection, take it to the vet. Most "wormers" or "dewormers" sold off the shelf are to rid your dog of round worms. These medications will NOT work for tapes.

It usually only happens to outdoor cats/dogs. they get very thin, while still eating a lot. You may see white worms in their feces, or even...um...coming out their bum-hole. If they get it really bad, they will trow up, and then, YOU WILL KNOW! those worms are huge...so if you think your pet has them, the vet has medicine you can put in their food .

They look like little grains of rice or pieces of thread/string in your dog's stool. These are actually pieces or segments of the tapeworm that break off. They also ocassionally can be seen protruding from the dog's anus. They are easily treatable by your vet. They are caused by the dog biting at fleas and ingesting a flea with tapeworm eggs/larvae. Very common in canines.
