VFW is an organization that works to secure the rights of veterans who have served in a war on foriegn soil. The American Legion is an organization that works to promote the rights of all veterans as well as promote patriotism and national pride through various youth and other programs. Both organizations are fine organizations, working toward a common goal

Both are veteran organizations. The big difference between the American Legion and the VFW is that one can join the American Legion if you are a veteran and the VFW only if you are a veteran of a campaign/war. For more information have a look at http://www.legion.org/ and http://www.vfw.org/

You can be in the AL, and never have fought in a foreign war, whereas to be a member of the VFW, you need to have wartime service overseas in a combat zone.
