Maybe you are having anxiety problems. I have panic disorder and my panic attacks cause racing thoughts and a general feeling of being out of it. I would go to the doctor and describe the feelings to them. I don't know if you are stressed out or not but stress can cause crazy things to happen to you. Good luck.

You have too much energy stored in your body.
This comes from eating more food than you can digest.
Do daily aerobic exercises, such as The Step, when you wake up for 5-15 minutes, and then again 5-15 minutes before you go to bed.
You will sleep peacefully the entire night. And a plus, you will eventually need less sleep than you did before.
I now need only 5 hours sleep a night.

One key part of your question is "in the last 5+ years." You may want to look at when you changed & why have you been waiting 5+ years to inquire about it. If you are a teacher, where you are the professional who helps others learn, why not seek professional help to learn to become more comfortable & seek more control. You may find some biological reason for the change or some tramatic event in your life. Use the resources you have in your closer circle, co-teachers that you trust, clergy at your church. If they don't know of resources, keep asking & exploring.

Birthday and year? This has been happening to many people the past few years. So rest assured (no pun intended) you are not losing it. Quite the opposite. And just out of curiosity, what do you teach? And how do you feel? Do you feel rested, or exhausted when you wake up?

Sounds like you have a sleep disorder and should see a doctor. Being disoriented upon waking is not a normal thing.

Until you can get to the Dr. I would take a p.m pain reliever to fall into a deep sleep. Your sleeping patterns seem off. I have the same problem except not as often as you.

I have the same problem. It's called insomnia. Go to your Doctor and ask for a prescription sleep aid if you really want to get some sleep. I know it sounds like the typical cure-all, but like I said, if you want results, take a pill and get some sleep. zzzzzzzzzzzz.

You have the same problem I have. Too smart and can't shut it off. My solution is to solve problems like what existed before the big bang and what caused it.
Try thinking about that before you go to sleep. Once you prove there's no god involved, you will be able to sleep easy.
